Amorphous Silica (similar to Coarse Grade DE)
Coarse amorphous silica is an untreated product.
It has very similar properties to diatomaceous earth - but is made from fossilized sea sponges rather than microscopic sea creatures.
It is lightweight and porous, and is useful to add to growing media in hydroponics/aquaponics, as well as a component in specialty potting mixes (orchids, bonsai, succulents etc.) to aid with aeration and drainage. It is also used as a filtration product to remove heavy metals and other contaminants in industrial applications.
Silica is known to promote strong cell growth – making plants more resilient to pest and disease attack, and more drought tolerant.
Application rate: 10 – 20% of volume in potting mixes and soils.
